Italian Gray clay bole is used in water gilding. It is applied on top of gesso and provides a color base for the gold leaf.
Italian Gray clay bole will change the color tone of the leaf by darkening it. Italian Gray clay bole can also be mixed with other clay bole colors to create custom colors.
Clay bole is mixed with water and Rabbit Skin Glue before use, and is applied in several thin layers before the gold or other leaf is applied. After completely dry, the leaf can be polished with an agate burnisher.
