Kölner Signcoll Size
Overview
Overview Signcoll is a gold leaf adhesive (aka size) developed for pinstriping techniques, lettering, stencil work, painting art, decorative faux finishes, hand-painted wallpaper etc. Signcoll is scratch-resistant and gives gold leaf a high shine. It is recommended for work that can be done quickly, and is NOT recommended for large projects.
With excellent adhesion it is perfect for thin lines. Signcoll can be diluted with water, to adjust for different types of brushes and surfaces.
Signcoll can be used for outdoor projects only if sealed with a clear-coat. For large projects, we recommend the Instacoll system.
Surface Preparation The surfaces must be dry and free from dust and grease. Each project will be different with its own unique base material. It is important to select the correct brush for your individual project. Depending on the surface being gilded, you may want to add water to thin the Signcoll Size to best accommodate the type of brush you are using and the surface being gilded.
Application of Signcoll
It is always best to do a small practice run to ensure that the viscosity of the Signcoll is correct for your application and brush being used. Signcoll size is especially produced for drawing thin and artistic lines. When you have selected the correct brush and are satisfied with your small practice run, set your creative skills to work.
Tack/Dry Tim
At an average temperature of about 68 °F, Signcoll size will reach tack in about 1-2 hours depending on humidity and temperature. The drying time will be longer in conditions of low temperatures and high humidity. You can test for proper tack by placing a piece of transfer paper (not gold) on to the surface. If the paper sticks, the Signcoll size is not yet dry enough.
Open Time to Gild
Once the Signcoll size is ready to gild, you have an average gilding time of about 4-12 hours, again depending on the surface, temperature and humidity.
Applying the Leaf
After the Signcoll size has reached proper tack, the leaf can be applied for 4-12 hours after which the leaf will no longer stick to the surface. You have the choice of using
Transfer or Loose Leaf.
Transfer Leaf Transfer gold is preferred as it is much easier to apply than loose leaf. With the leaf side down, lay the transfer leaf onto the surface you are gilding and firmly press the leaf down onto the Signcoll size and then remove the transfer paper leaving the gold adhered to the surface being gilded.
Loose Leaf
If you do not have transfer leaf, use a Gilders Tip to pick up the loose gold leaf carefully lay it on the item being gilded. From the gold leaf books, remove a sheet of the tissue paper that separates the leaves. Place the tissue paper on the back of the gold leaf, and use an Kolner Tissue to gently apply pressure on the tissue paper, rubbing and pushing the gold leaf down into the Signcoll size.
Cleanup
Clean brushes and tools with warm soap and water.

Signcoll Size should be kept in a dry, cool, well-ventilate area, away from UV light and direct sunlight. Keep the containers tightly closed and avoid frost and heat. Depending on storage conditions, shelf life of unused product is 1-2 years.
