Kölner Miniatum 3D Gel Information & Instructions

Gold Leaf Water Base Size

Overview
Kolner Miniatum 3D Gel is a unique gilding size that is a flexible pasty material that is ideal for gilding gold leafing on paper, degreased vellum, leather, illuminated manuscripts and many flexible surfaces like foil or plastic. The material is thick, so it does not flow. You can add layers to give depth and more 3D effect.

APPLICATION OF MINIATUM 3D Gel

It can be applied with a brush (not to soft hair), a painter knife, small spatulas etc. (Tip: use the cupcake decorating tools to make special effects) Stencils can also be used to create beautiful effects. Remove the stencil when the Miniatum 3D Gel has dried slightly. Depending on the thickness of the layer of Gel, gilding can usually begin 3 hours after the application of the Gel. The thicker the applied Gel, the longer you should wait to start gilding. It is best to finish your gilding within a 72 hour time frame for real gold and for metal leaf, best to finish within 12 hours. If the Miniatum 3D Gel has become too dry and the gold leaf no longer sticks, the Miniatum 3D Gel can be activated with warm air, from a hairdryer up to at least 5 days after application.

Transfer Leaf gold is preferred as it is much easier to apply than loose leaf. With the leaf side down, lay the transfer leaf onto the surface you are gilding and firmly press the leaf down onto the Miniatum 3D Gel using a Kolner Tissue to force the leaf into the 3D Gel.

Loose Leaf If you do not have transfer leaf, use a Gilders Tip to pick up the loose gold leaf carefully lay it on the item being gilded. From the gold leaf books, remove a sheet of the tissue paper that separates the leaves. Place the tissue paper on the back of the gold leaf, and use an Kolner Tissue to gently apply pressure on the tissue paper, rubbing and pushing the gold leaf down into the 3D Gel.

HELPFUL HINTS:

Always a good idea to test all materials and procedures before attempting to perform work on the final object!

The leaves can be overlapped slightly so that the entire surface is covered. The edges of the leaves can be pushed into each other by laying a piece of the transfer paper or tissue paper from the book on the seam. Use a Kolner Tissue to gently apply pressure to the paper which will push the leaf together. For surfaces with reliefs or high detail the Instacoll Tool can be used to work the leaf down into corners and crevices. To achieve a higher gloss, use a small amount of pressure and polish the gold leaf by gently rubbing the gilded gold leaf in a circular motion with the Kolner Tissue. Do not use an agate burnisher.

Cleanup: Clean brushes and tools with soap and water.
