Kaolin Powder Information & Instructions

Kolner Instacoll

Overview

Gilder's Kaolin Powder is used as a "resistant" when gilding. It resists gold leaf sticking to it, and is applied to areas where gold leaf is not wanted.  It has no effect on the adhesiveness paint or adhesive size.

Gilder's Kaolin Powder can be used on almost any substrate.   When used on wood, glass, plastic or metal, it will restrict gold from sticking to the base material.  Because the powder is so fine, you can easily see any screening, drawing or outlines on the area being gilded.

Kaolin Powder is an extremely fine hydrous white clay, milled and processed to produce a particle size of 0.5 microns or less.

Our Kaolin Powder comes with a soft applicator pad that will not scratch your gold leaf. Available in 4oz containers (net weight 2oz).

Surface Preparation

Before Kaolin Powder is applied, make sure that the surface is clean, free of dust, and ready for size to be applied.

Applying Kaolin Powder

After the surface is ready to be gilded, and before size is applied, dab the applicator pad into the Kaolin Powder and then apply a small amount to and around the area where gold leaf is not wanted. Smooth the Kaolin Powder evenly over the surface and brush off any excess with the applicator or with a soft brush.

Size is then applied over the Kaolin Powder in the areas that will be gilded. Once set, leaf will stick to the size, and not to the surrounding areas that have Kaolin Powder on the surface.

After the leaf has set, remove the excess gold leaf from the area that you have gilded. Depending on the base material, many gilders will remove any traces of the Kaolin Powder by using a damp soft cloth or sponge. Not wet, just damp.

Cleanup

Wash hands after use. Use a damp cloth to wipe surfaces.
Do not return unused powder to container, discard.

Storage

When done, put the applicator back into the container and replace the lid. Store in a dry location.
